Biographical note ..................
Sunish Subramanian Kunju is a animal welfare / rights especially
wildlife and environment, RTI activist, having delicate more than 15 years for
the conservation of city flora and fauna in and around Mumbai. Sunish began work
for this cause since he was in school, as a member of Smt. Maneka Gandhi’s
People for Animals later he started an NGO Plant & Animals Welfare Society
– Mumbai (PAWS-Mumbai) in 2002 with the help of other like-minded people. Over
the years he has raised several pertinent issues concerning the environment and
animals by involving students, youths and common citizen into his movement.
His USP lies in the fact that PAWS-Mumbai is only group in Mumbai
run by the youth that works especially to help the cause of wildlife rescue.
Incidentally, he and his PAWS-Mumbai also help rehabilitate wildlife, with the
assistance of the wildlife department. This is especially important in a city
like Mumbai where large numbers of areas are being developed every day, leaving
little or no green cover for snakes and other wildlife that are common visitors
to residential areas. His Wildlife Rescue Team at PAWS-Mumbai attends rescue
calls and educates residents about snakes, most of whom are non-poisonous and
not a danger to people.
In 2003, he was appointed as Hony. Animal Welfare Officer by Animal
Welfare Board of India, Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of
India and also on the Committee to Monitor Animal Welfare Laws in Maharashtra
which is appointed by Hon. Bombay High Court. In 2009 Thane Forest Department
recognized him as Snake Friend. And recently he is been associated with
Wildlife Crime Control Bureau as Volunteer.
As we can see large part of forest area has been encroached upon
forcing the wildlife to stray in human settlements. Sunish and his team at
PAWS-Mumbai, rescued several such animals and release them safely back into the
natural habitat of forest under the supervision of Wildlife Staff. As Hony
Animal Welfare Officer, he has taken up issues of cruelty to animals in zoos,
circuses. Sunish has shown exemplary courage in rescuing many animals subjected
to cruelty in circuses, zoos. He has taken the issues to logical conclusion by
preparing strong reports about the cruelty to domestic as well as wild animals.
He has been active in various undercover operations to burst illicit wildlife
trade in and around Mumbai with the help of forest department officials. Sunish
and his team has been active in investigating cases of cruelty to animals
helping local law enforcement agency to catch hold of the offender. By using
Right to Information - RTI, he have success in exposing many illegality and
which are banch mark in the history of Mumbai's animal welfare / right
movement.
Sunish's activities are support by public elected representatives,
celebrities, activists, NGO's, Government Agencies and common citizens but has
also taken active part in activities conducted by him and PAWS-Mumbai.
His future plans is to setup a small centre cum clinic, where we
can keep, treat and take care of injured birds & animals, especially for
wildlife, as now we use to keep it in our homes or in volunteers place or have
to shift to nearest animal hospital / shelter.
"Kindness to animals makes a better world for all of us"

Sunish relocating rescue Python from residential area back into its natural habitat.
My fascination for the wildlife began much before I even started speaking. During my childhood days, I learn that, the freedom of the wildlife got translated into my happiness, something that my folks didn't buy, only initially, thought, eventually, when I came across like-minded people said Sunish.
During my childhood, I witnessed death of a parrot that was attacked by a murder of crows, just because there was no veterinary clinic in our locality! That's how & when PAWS-Mumbai was born with sole aim & intention of total freedom for the animals and I strive to achieve that, by involving youth and students in to my movement. Strange and shocking it may sound, but the fact remains that I never learnt or was trained to rescue or treat animals said Sunish.
"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".
